CYCLONES' COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN TOLEDO
Walleye Hang on Despite Late-Game Push
Toledo, OH- The Cincinnati Cyclones (7-5-1-0) fell to the Toledo Walleye, 3-2, on Saturday evening. Defenseman Geoff Fortman and forward Jesse Schultz scored the goals for Cincinnati.
After the Walleye took a 1-0 lead early in the first on a goal from defenseman Patrick McCarron, Cincinnati managed to tie the game when Fortman kept the puck alive during a line change, skated around a defender, and slipped it in to tie the game, 1-1.
Toledo was not deterred and lit the lamp twice more; once on the power play from forward Christian Hilbrich, and an even strength tally from forward Zach Nastasiuk to put the Walleye ahead, 3-1, through 20 minutes.
In the second, Cincinnati continued to battle and pulled to within a goal when forward Justin Danforth came streaking down the wing and sent a pass over to Schultz who tapped it in on the backdoor to cut Toledo’s lead to 3-2.
The 3-2 score held up throughout the remainder of the second, and in the third Cincinnati continued to apply the offensive pressure and received multiple Grade A scoring opportunities, however couldn’t find the back of the net. Cincinnati mounted one last offensive rush with the goaltender pulled late in the period, but the Walleye held firm and preserved the 3-2 win.
The Walleye outshot Cincinnati, 34-18 on the night, with goaltender Anthony Peters stopping 31 in defeat. Cincinnati and Toledo conclude their three-game series on Wednesday evening back in Cincinnati. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:35pm ET.
