RECAP: CYCLONES FALL IN FT. WAYNE
For Immediate Release: January 20, 2017
Mulvey Nets A Pair in First of Three-Game Weekend
Ft. Wayne, IN- The Cincinnati Cyclones (17-16-4-0) fell to the Ft. Wayne Komets, 4-2, on Friday night. Forward Colin Mulvey had both goals for the Cyclones, who are in the midst of a season-long eight-game road trip.
After a scoreless, back-and-forth opening period, the Komets drew first blood 8:35 into the second when forward Mason Baptista deflected a point shot into the net to give Ft. Wayne a 1-0 lead.
The momentum was short-lived however, as just 35 seconds later Cincinnati tied the game up when forward Dominic Zombo sent a pass from the left corner of the offensive zone to Mulvey who was sneaking down the back side, and he tapped the puck past Ft. Wayne netminder Garrett Bartus to pull the Cyclones even, 1-1.
Ft. Wayne was not deterred and regained the lead with less than five minutes to play when Baptista tallied his second of the period to give the Komets a 2-1 edge. That advantage became 3-1 1:10 later when forward Jamie Schaafsma found the back of the net while on the power play.
Ft. Wayne took their 3-1 lead into the third period and tacked on one more midway through the frame when defenseman Kyle Follmer beat Cyclones netminder Joel Rumpel, who was brought in late in the second to replace Mark Visentin.
Facing a 4-1 deficit with a little over a minute left, Cincinnati pulled to within a pair when forward Jordan Sims found Mulvey in the slot, and he banged home his second of the night to cut the Komets’ lead to 4-2.
That was all the offense the Cyclones were able to muster and the Komets held on for the 4-2 win, despite Cincinnati receiving a few more quality scoring chances while on the power play and the goaltender pulled in the final seconds.
The Cyclones were outshot, 31-26 on the night, with Visentin and Rumpel combining to stop 27 in the loss. Cincinnati continues their three-game weekend on Saturday night in Indianapolis against the Indy Fuel. Face-off is scheduled for 7:35pm ET.
