CYCLONES DROP HEARTBREAKER IN OVERTIME
Cincinnati Falls in Front End of Home-and-Home
CINCINNATI, OH- The Cincinnati Cyclones (9-3-2-1) fell to the Ft. Wayne Komets, 3-2, in overtime on Wednesday night. Forwards Jack Downing and Joe Pendenza scored the goals for the Cyclones.
The Komets wasted little time finding the back of the net, as just 4:37 into the opening period, forward Shawn Skelly rifled the puck in from the left circle, putting Ft. Wayne up, 1-0.
Cincinnati tied the game up roughly 10 minutes later while on the power play, when forward Zach Budish sent a pass to Downing who was all alone on the backdoor, and he slammed the puck into the net, tying the game, 1-1, after 20 minutes.
After a scoreless second period that saw both sides get a number of quality chances, the Komets went up, 2-1, when forward Garrett Thompson netted his third of the season, 6:26 into the period.
The Cyclones were not deterred, and tied the game with under five minutes left, when forward Eric Robinson sent a pass up to Pendenza on a delayed penalty call, and Pendenza skated over the Ft. Wayne line and rifled a shot past Komets netminder Spencer Martin, pulling the Cyclones even, 2-2.
The two sides headed to overtime, and in the extra session, Ft. Wayne defenseman Cody Corbett wristed the game-winner past Cyclones netminder Brad Thiessen with 1:09 remaining, sending the Komets to the 3-2 overtime victory.
The Cyclones outshot Ft. Wayne, 29-27, while the power play converted on one of its four chances. The two sides wrap up their home-and-home series on Thursday night in Ft. Wayne. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
