Wings Rally Past Cyclones, 5-3

KALAMAZOO, Michigan – A third period outburst for the Kalamazoo Wings (11-15-1-1) was enough to rally past the Cincinnati Cyclones (13-12-0-4) by a 5-3 final score in front of 2,156 at Wings Stadium on Friday night.

For the second night in a row, the Cyclones scored the game's opening goal at 2:17 of the first period when David MacDonald sniped a shot past Scott Munroe (W, 31 saves, 2-0-0) from the left point to make it 1-0. The Wings would answer back quickly, though, at the 5:32 mark as Gergo Nagy throttled into the Cincinnati zone and beat Sam Brittain (L, 34 saves, 6-5-0-1) with a shoulder-high wrist shot to knot things at one. The Cyclones would regain the cushion with less than five minutes remaining in the stanza when Josh McFadden finished off a two-on-one rush with Branden Gracel by burying his fourth goal of the season. And thanks to a successful Cyclones penalty kill late in the frame, the visitors held the 2-1 edge after 20 minutes.

Defense reigned supreme in the middle period as neither team could find the net despite nine shots on cage apiece, as the score remained 2-1 Cyclones at the second intermission.

The Wings offense finally came to life in the final period as they pulled even again at the 2:02 mark when Ludwig Blomstrand redirected home his eighth goal of the season, making it 2-2. Just 2:29 later, the Cyclones pulled back out in front when Zach Budish collected his eight lamplighter of the year, pushing his team to a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, though, the Wings exploded for three unanswered goals from Jean Bourbeau (who had two in the frame) and one from Joe Sova over a 3:34 timespan to capture a 5-3 cushion. Kalamazoo would hold on to win by the same score.

The Cyclones will be back on the ice at U.S. Bank Arena tomorrow night when they host the Wheeling Nailers at 7:30pm.
