Wings Blank Cyclones, 3-0
KALAMAZOO, Michigan – A 29-save shutout performance from goaltender Joel Martin led the Kalamazoo Wings (13-15-1-1) past the Cincinnati Cyclones (15-13-0-4) by a 3-0 final score in front of 2,795 at Wings Stadium on Saturday night.
The Wings broke the scoreless deadlock at the 14:50 mark of the opening period as Dane Fox redirected a shot from Eric Kattelus past Cyclones goalie Rob Madore (L, 30 saves, 8-8-0-3) to make it 1-0. Kalamazoo would hold the slim edge heading into the first intermission.
Matt Caria extended the Wings' advantage two a pair by finishing off an odd-man rush with Curtis Valk with his seventh goal of the season at 7:45 of the middle period. And despite having a pair of power plays in the frame, Cincinnati found itself down 2-0 after 40 minutes.
The final period continued with a defensive flavor, with the Cyclones attempting to find the net for the first time. Still without a goal in the last minute, Cincinnati pulled Madore in an attempt to rally, however Sacha Guimond would get credit for an empty-net goal as the puck was guided by a Cyclones defender into his own net. Joel Martin (W, 29 saves, 10-8-1-1) remained perfect as well to earn his second blanking of the season.
