Walleye Swim Past Cyclones, 6-3

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo Walleye (6-8-0-0) scored five times in the final two periods to defeat the Cincinnati Cyclones (4-6-0-2) by a 6-3 final in front of 3,859 at Huntington Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Walleye grabbed the early 1-0 lead just 2:28 into the opening period when Evan Rankin batted home his team-leading ninth goal of the season past Cyclones goalie Chet Pickard (L, 28 saves, 3-5-0-0). Cincinnati answered almost immediately though, at 3:05, as Rob Slaney tallied for the second time in three games to knot the score at one after 20 minutes of play.

Anthony Luciani erased a five-game goal scoring drought at 4:04 of the second period to put Cincinnati up 2-1 when he wristed a shot past Toledo net minder Carter Hutton (W, 33 saves, 5-5-0-0). Unfortunately, the Walleye responded with three unanswered goals in the middle frame to regain a 4-2 cushion after two periods. Simon Danis-Pepin, Bryan Rufenach, and Adam Estoclet each scored goals just six minutes apart, two of which coming in the final 1:09 of the frame.

Right out of the gate in the third period, Evan Rankin stole a loose puck and lit the lamp for the second time in the tilt at the 0:37 mark to push Toledo ahead 5-2. Cincinnati pulled within a pair of goals when Rob Slaney deflected in his second lamp-lighter of the weekend at the 16:20 mark. However, with only 39 seconds left in regulation, Joey Martin hit the empty net to seal the 6-3 triumph for the Walleye.
