Stingrays Swim Past Cyclones, 3-1

NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina – An offensive first period proved to be just enough for the South Carolina Stingrays (10-10-0-4) to get past the Cincinnati Cyclones (8-7-0-4) by a 3-1 final score in front of 2,813 at North Charleston Coliseum on Tuesday night.

The Stingrays opened the scoring at 4:32 of the first period when Andrew Cherniwchan barely beat goaltender Sam Brittain (L, 11 saves, 3-3-0-1) on a wraparound attempt to make it 1-0. Minutes later, at 7:48, Andrew Ammon gathered a puck in the right circle and sent a sharp angle shot past Brittain to extend the edge, sparking a goalie change for Cincinnati. The Cyclones would answer back at 13:07 when Zach Budish fed a perfect pass to David Pacan in the slot, who proceeded to net his second goal of the year to cut the deficit in half. Unfortunately, South Carolina would regain the two-goal cushion at 15:50 as Branden Gracel broke in on a two-on-one rush and dangled past the defense and Rob Madore (ND, 16 saves, 5-4-0-3) to make it a 3-1 game through 20 minutes of play.

Despite outshooting the Stingrays 17-10 in the middle frame along with four power plays, the Cyclones remained behind by a pair after a scoreless second. The third period continued to run in Cincinnati's favor, in terms of shots on net; the Cyclones outshot the 'Rays 8-3 in the final stanza but still couldn't get a puck past Adam Morrison (W, 35 saves, 5-3-0). In the final minutes, Cincinnati pulled Madore in an attempt to rally with an extra skater - but it wasn't to be. South Carolina held on to win by a 3-1 final score.
