VAIVE’S HAT TRICK SENDS ‘CLONES TO OVERTIME VICTORY
Cincinnati Snaps Four-Game Skid in Thrilling Fashion
Moline, IL- The Cincinnati Cyclones (22-15-1-0) came from behind to beat the Quad City Mallards, 6-5 in overtime, on Sunday evening. Forward and assistant captain Justin Vaive led way with a hat trick, including the game-winner in overtime, while forwards Justin Danforth, Brandon McNally, and Alex Kile each added lone tallies for the Cyclones, who snap their four-game losing streak.
The Mallards jumped on the Cyclones early, getting goals from forwards Chris Izmirlian and Matt Pohlkamp, and defenseman Jared Nightingale to take a 3-0 lead, 12:29 into the opening period.
Cincinnati started chipping away and found some power play magic when Danforth went to the front of the net and slammed in a rebound on the back door to put the Cyclones on the board, 3-1.
The Cyclones pulled to within a goal moments later when a point shot from defenseman Arvin Atwal pin-balled off some bodies out front, and ultimately deflected in off McNally to cut Cincinnati’s deficit to one, 3-2, after 20 minutes.
In the second the Mallards regained their two-goal edge at the 13:54 mark, when Jamie Tardif found the back to the net to put Quad City up, 4-2.
Cincinnati was not deterred and pulled back to within a goal, 4-3, when Danforth wristed a shot that deflected off Vaive and in for the Cyclones’ second power play marker of the night, 15:44 into the frame.
Roughly two minutes later the ‘Clones pulled even when Kile skated into the high slot and snapped a shot that went in past Quad City goaltender Jake Paterson to tie the game, 4-4, after two periods.
In the third, the Mallards regained the lead with a little under two minutes left in regulation when Tardif scored his second power play marker of the night to give Quad City a 5-4 lead and force Cincinnati to take their time out.
With 1:54 left in the third, the Cyclones battled back and pulled level for a second time, when forward Jesse Schultz sent a pass to Vaive who tapped it in on the back door to tie the game, 5-5, and force overtime.
In the extra session, Cincinnati needed just 1:35 to snap their four-game skid, when Atwal threw a pass to Vaive who buried the game-winner and completed his hat trick, sending the Cyclones to a 6-5 overtime win.
The Cyclones were outshot, 41-29 on the night, with goaltender Jonas Johansson stopping 36 in the win. Cincinnati returns home on Friday night when they welcome in the Indy Fuel to U.S. Bank Arena for the first time this season. Face-off is slated for 7:35pm ET.
