RUMPEL EARNS WEEKLY ECHL HONORS

Goaltender’s 97 Saves Backstopped Cincinnati to Two Wins

 

Cincinnati, OH- The ECHL has announced that Cyclones goaltender Joel Rumpel has been named CCM ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the week of February 27-March 5. Rumpel had a stellar week for the Cyclones, posting a record of 2-0-0-0 and a 1.00 goals-against average, and he stopped 97 of the 99 shots he faced for a .979 save percentage in two games.

His monster week began with a 46-save performance in Thursday’s 2-0 win over the Adirondack Thunder, marking his second-consecutive shutout (Feb. 24). He then turned aside 51-of-53 Thunder shots in Saturday’s 3-2 win.

Hailing from Swift Current, SK, Rumpel has appeared in seven games for the Cyclones this season posting a record of 3-3-0 with two shutouts along with a 2.74 GAA and a .925 SV%.

Rumpel is coming off of his second Kelly Cup championship with the Allen Americans in 2015-16. He appeared in 39 games with the Americans last season and compiled a record of 21-11-4 along with a 2.81 GAA and a .907 SV%, with his 21 wins ranking him eighth amongst League goaltenders. He skated in three playoff games last season as well, earning a 1-1-0 record along with a 3.22 GAA and a .853 SV%. Rumpel also suited up in a pair of games with the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League (AHL) posting a 1-0-1 with a 2.51 GAA and a .881 SV%.

He joined Allen late in the 2014-15 season upon completion of his collegiate career, appearing in four games in the regular season and seven in the playoffs. He had a 3-0-0-1 record in the regular season and a 3-2-0-0 mark in the postseason on his way to his first Kelly Cup championship.

Prior to turning pro, Rumpel enjoyed a stellar four-year collegiate career with the University of Wisconsin Badgers. He compiled a 53-50-11 record with a 2.51 GAA and a .918 SV% during that time, and helped guide the team to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances, a WCHA Final Five Tournament championship, and a Big Ten Tournament championship. Additionally, he was named as a finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, presented to the nation’s top collegiate player, and the Mike Richter Award, presented to the nation’s most outstanding collegiate goaltender following his junior season.
