Cyclones Rout IceMen, 4-0
CINCINNATI, Ohio – On the strength of a two-point night from team captain David MacDonald and some outstanding defense, the Cincinnati Cyclones (16-13-0-4) routed the Evansville IceMen (11-20-2-2) by a 4-0 final score in front of 4,094 at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday night.
Despite a hefty 14-5 shot advantage in the opening period, the Cyclones found themselves scoreless with the IceMen through 20 minutes as Evansville net minder Scott Greenham (L, 32 saves, 1-2-0) remained unscathed.
The Cyclones broke the deadlock at the 9:00 mark of the middle stanza when Branden Gracel one-timed a shot past Greenham after catching a perfect pass from Michael Neal out of the corner. Then, just 1:17 later, David MacDonald found the back of the net with a one-timer of his own thanks to a great tape-to-tape feed from Christiaan Minella. And with a total of 11 saves through 40 minutes from Sam Brittain (W, 18 saves, 7-5-0-1) at the other end of the ice, Cincinnati went into the break ahead by two.
The home squad would add a big insurance tally midway through the final period when MacKenzie Weegar, who had a goal waved off earlier in the frame, sniped in his first lamplighter as a Cyclone at 11:58 to extend the edge to 3-0. Then, at 17:09, Jaynen Rissling banged in a rebound for his first professional goal to cap off the scoring. Brittain and the Cincinnati defense salted away the final minutes to secure the club's fourth shutout victory of the season, and second for Brittain.
