Brittain, Cyclones Shutout Wings, 2-0
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Rookie goaltender Sam Brittain turned aside a career-high 36 saves to earn his first professional shutout, a 2-0 win for the Cincinnati Cyclones (8-6-0-4) over the Kalamazoo Wings (7-11-1-1) in front of 4,107 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night.
The teams played nearly two full periods of scoreless hockey despite a combined eight power play chances. However, the Cyclones finally got on the board at 16:54 to open the scoring as Byron Froese stole a puck away from a Wings defender and deposited a backhander through the legs of Oscar Dansk (L, 31 saves, 0-4-0) to make it 1-0. With the strike, Froese extended his point scoring streak to 10 consecutive games. At the other end of the ice, Sam Brittain (W, 36 saves, 3-2-0-1) remained perfect with 21 saves through two periods of play to keep his team ahead by one.
The defensive flavor continued for Brittain and company in the final period, despite the fact that the Wings peppered 15 shots on net in the stanza. During their final of six power plays, Kalamazoo gave the puck up to Froese, who went two-on-one the other way with Zach Budish. After faking a shot, Froese set up Budish who buried a crucial insurance goal to give the Cyclones a 2-0 edge at 8:26. As the game wound down to the final minute, Kalamazoo pulled its net minder in hopes of sparking a rally, but it was not to be. Brittain secured a couple more of his 36 total saves to seal a 2-0 shutout, his first as a professional.
