Cyclones Rally Again, Steamroll Express 4-2
CINCINNATI, Ohio – For the 15th time this season, the Cincinnati Cyclones (27-21-1-7) managed to mount a comeback by rattling off three unanswered third period goals to defeat the Chicago Express (26-22-6-3) by a 4-2 final score in front of 2,013 at U.S. Bank Arena on Thursday night.
Chicago jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Ryley Grantham poked a loose puck through Cyclones goalie Chet Pickard (W, 19 saves, 11-10-0-2) at 15:05. However, Cincinnati answered back as Garrett Wilson crashed the net and banked in his 15th goal of the season after a pass from Joe Devin at 17:56 to even the score at one. Then, with under a minute to play in the frame, Taylor Ellington’s point shot redirected off of a Cyclones’ stick in front of the net and eluded Pickard’s left shoulder as the Express pulled back ahead 2-1 at the first intermission.
Despite Cincinnati throwing 14 shots on cage in the middle frame, Chicago net minder Peter Mannino (L, 34 saves, 10-8-2-2) kept his team up by a 2-1 count through 40 minutes. But like they had done on 14 other occasions this season, Cincinnati found a way to rally back in the final stanza. At 6:03, Taylor Aronson blasted in a one-timer from just outside the left circle to knot the score at two. Joe Devin followed at 7:15 by pick-pocketing Chicago defenseman Taylor Ellington and sending a wrist shot over Mannino for the go-ahead (and eventual game-winning) strike, making it 3-2 Cyclones. With less than four minutes to play, Matt Sisca picked up a loose puck at center ice and went in alone on Chicago’s goaltender; his shot through Mannino’s legs squirted over the goal line to extend Cincinnati’s cushion to 4-2. They would hold on to win by the same score.
