Cyclones Blow Past Nailers, 3-2 in Overtime

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Cyclones forward Mathieu Aubin tucked in the game-winning goal with just 1:41 gone into overtime as the Cincinnati Cyclones (1-1 preseason) defeated the Wheeling Nailers (1-1 preseason) by a 3-2 final score in front of 2,563 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night.
Wheeling opened the scoring at the 5:03 mark of the first period when Chris Kushneriuk sent a shot past Cyclones netminder Danny Taylor (W, 20 saves on 22 shots, 1-1 preseason) for a 1-0 Nailers lead. Cincinnati answered back just minutes later, at 9:49, as Garret Wilson caught a tape-to-tape pass from Mathieu Aubin and potted the equalizer. Cyclones defenseman Adam Comrie followed with the go-ahead tally at 15:57 as his wrist shot beat Nailers goaltender Alex Kangas (L, 24 saves on 27 shots, 0-1 preseason). The lead would be short-lived, however; with just 30 seconds left in the opening frame, Mikael Bedard scored his second goal in as-many nights, sliding one past Taylor to knot the score at two heading into the first intermission.
The rest of regulation was a stalemate for both sides. Cincinnati outshot the Nailers 18-14 in the final two regulation periods but neither team could find the net, so the game was to be decided in overtime.
In the extra session, Mathieu Aubin picked up a rebound along the low rim of the left circle and tucked it past Kangas for the game-winning score – giving the Cyclones a 3-2 overtime victory to close out their preseason schedule.
