Cyclones Rally to Beat Stingrays in Shootout, 5-4
NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina – Mathieu Aubin’s goal in the fourth round of the shootout capped off an incredible come-back by the Cincinnati Cyclones (28-25-6-3), as they rally from a two-goal deficit to beat the South Carolina Stingrays (33-27-2-2) 5-4 at North Charleston Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
The Stingrays raced out to a 2-0 lead as Luke Popko and Matt Scherer scored just 1:22 apart midway through the first period. Minutes later, at the 15:46 mark, Mathieu Aubin pulled the Cyclones within a goal as he sent a wrist shot past Stingrays goalie Shane Owen (SOL, 31 saves, 7-6-1-2) on the power play, making it a 2-1 game. However, with under a minute to play South Carolina temporarily pulled ahead again by two as Tommy Goebel snuck a shot from along the goal line under the pad of Cyclones netminder Brian Foster (SOW, 27 saves, 6-3-0) at the 19:28 mark. Luckily though, with only nine seconds left in the frame, Barret Ehgoetz tipped home an Eric Kattelus point blast for his 14th goal of the season and cut the Stingrays lead to 3-2 after 20 minutes.
The second period was filled with several questionable penalty calls on both sides, however, only South Carolina was able to capitalize with the power play. During a two-man advantage for the Stingrays, Nikita Kashirsky caught a cross ice pass from Tommy Goebel and buried a tap-in goal at 12:47to regain a two goal cushion heading into the second intermission.
Just 2:28 into in the third period, Cincinnati’s Eric Kattelus snuck into the South Carolina end and back-handed a shot through the legs of Owen for his first professional goal, pulling the Cyclones within one. Heading into the final minute, Cincinnati pulled Foster in-lieu of an extra attacker – and it paid off. Brock Sheahan battled for a loose puck down low and poked home his second tally of the season with just 47 seconds left in regulation, which tied the game and sent the teams into overtime. During the extra-session, Cincinnati earned a power play when Kattelus was taken down in the offensive zone, however, they could not cash in; so for the seventh time this season, Cincinnati was forced to decide the game in the shootout.
After three rounds of missed shots for both sides, Mathieu Aubin sent a laser past Owen’s glove-side shoulder in round four – putting Cincinnati up a goal. Foster then proceeded to shut down the last two Stingrays shooters, including former Cyclone Ryan Del Monte to earn his sixth win of the season and first in the shootout. Cincinnati’s record in overtime/shootout games climbs to 8-9.
