Cyclones Add Another Defenseman, Announce Training Camp Roster

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The 2010 Kelly Cup Champion Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that they have agreed to terms with rookie defenseman Brad Schroeder for the 2010-11 season.  Schroeder is one of seventeen players who will participate in this weekend’s Training Camp.

Schroeder, a native of Drake, Saskatchewan, will embark on his first season as a professional.  The 6-foot-3 defenseman played four seasons at Princeton University, where he was a mainstay on the Tigers blue line.  He logged 106 games during his collegiate career, twice being named to the ECAC All-Academic Team.  In 2009-10, Schroeder was the recipient of the Richard E. Vaughan Cup, awarded annually to the varsity player who best exemplifies perseverance and dedication to Princeton Hockey.

“Brad is a guy who could be very good at this level,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde.  “He’s a big player who is a defensively-minded defenseman coming from a good program. Most importantly, though, he’s a great person too.”

In addition to the 12 players already agreed to terms with Cincinnati, six free agent players have been invited to participate in camp this weekend.  Sam D’Agostino, Ryan Hitchcock, Eric Slais, Mark Van Vliet, Justin Axelson, and Ted Nischan will all try out in hopes of being on the 2010-11 roster when the Cyclones open the season on October 15 at Elmira.

Sam D’Agostino, a six-foot, 200-pound forward, spent three years at the NCAA level with UMass-Amherst and UMass-Lowell.  The 24-year-old posted 4 points in 42 career college games.  Eric Slais, a Fenton, Missouri native, was a four-year letter winner at Brown University.  Prior to college, he was teammates with current Cyclone Kevin Roeder while a member of the USHL’s Chicago Steel.   The Cyclones have also invited defensemen Ryan Hitchcock and Mark Van Vliet to camp while goaltenders Justin Axelson and Ted Nischan will try out between the pipes.
